There was a period — roughly 2020 through 2023 — when Perth's late-night bar scene effectively went dark. The combination of post-pandemic caution, staffing shortages and a quieter night-time economy made midnight feel like a closing time, not a starting point.
That moment is over. The late-night cocktail bar is back, and the rooms that committed to staying open past 1am are now reaping the benefit. Friday and Saturday nights in particular have a pulse the city hasn't felt in years.
Part of this is generational — the post-pandemic cohort is finally hitting drinking age in numbers, and they have less interest in the early-finish, table-booking format that dominated the recovery years.
Part of it is the bars themselves taking late-night seriously again. Decent music programming, food that doesn't switch off at 10pm, and a willingness to staff up for the back half of the night rather than running on fumes.
The cove is a useful test case. Two years ago, midnight on Claisebrook was empty streets and locked doors. Now there are at least three rooms still buzzing at 1am, and the queue for a late-night drink is real.
This is the format the city was missing. Long may it last.
