The good news is the city has more options than it had even five years ago. The sports-bar format has matured, and a handful of venues now do match-day with the same care other rooms reserve for a wine list.
What you want is simple: clear sight lines from anywhere in the room, sound that carries without being painful, draft pours that don't slow down at half time, and a kitchen that can actually feed a packed room mid-third quarter.
The cove has surprisingly become one of the better corners of the city for this. The bigger rooms have invested properly in screens, and the smaller ones have leaned into the bar atmosphere — a tighter crowd, a single big TV, a louder cheer.
Avoid the venues that treat AFL as an afterthought. You'll know within ten minutes — if the bar staff don't know which game is on the main screen, you're in the wrong room.
