It was to protect the independent, neighbourhood spirit that made us fall for it in the first place, and to pour a properly good drink while we were at it.
That perspective changes everything. We know what it feels like to want a quiet solo pint on a Wednesday and to want a rowdy table of ten on a Saturday. We’ve been on both sides of the bar and it shows in the way we host.
A Community Built One Regular at a Time
When we talk about community, we don’t mean a club or a committee. We mean the plumber who finishes early and props up the corner of the bar, the couple who bring their dog down every Sunday, and the group of mates who’ve claimed the same deck table for two winters running. There’s Tennent’s on tap, our own house-brewed Claisey Lager and Claisey Ale served ice-cold, and what we’d happily argue is Perth’s best-poured pint of Guinness: rich, creamy and given the time it deserves rather than rushed under the tap.
The food carries the same honest heart, with a Scottish and Irish lean. Our Haggis Spring Rolls arrive crisp and golden, with a whisky sauce for dipping, and it’s no wonder our chips, smothered in rich curry sauce, disappear as fast as we can send them out. This is hearty comfort food, the kind that pairs with a cold pint and a good chat, not the kind that needs a translation on the menu.
If you’re after something heartier, the Chicken Parmigiana ($31) does exactly what a proper parmi should, and when the cold sets in, the Smoke House Winter Platter ($85) piles slow-cooked brisket, pork ribs, lamb ribs, chicken wings and loaded cheesy fries high enough to feed the whole table.
